Respite care

Respite care is essential for both carers and the cared for. Often, we underestimate the toll that caring for a loved one can take on ourselves. With mental and physical fatigue being very real side effects of providing full time (or even part time) care for a person with daily care needs.

What is respite care?

In-home or community respite provides care and support for a client while the primary carer is absent from the home. Respite care provided by Care1 can provide caregivers with a much-needed break away from the responsibility of caring for a loved one.

The purpose of respite care is to give carers a prearranged break from looking after the person they care for. This break is a predetermined length spanning from a few hours to days so that the carer gets a chance to rest and recover so they can feel refreshed and offer better care.

Why is respite care so important?

We often hear stories of caregivers feeling guilty about taking time away and leaving their loved one in the care of others. But respite from care is incredibly important – it allows carers to recharge, take time out and engage in important self-care activities that enable a better balance and, in turn, a better standard of care for the client. Just as a car cannot run on an empty tank, nor can those providing care for others.

Importantly, respite care also gives the client a break and gives them the opportunity to engage with new and varied people. Professionally provided respite care means your loved one is in the safe and capable hands of a trained Care1 employee. They are able to administer medication, provide personal care and ensure the client is safe and secure in your absence.

Care1 also offers emergency respite care that steps in to cover for a regular carer who may be ill, hospitalised or need a time out to deal with emergency personal matters.
